Communications Professionals Dave & Julie

Dave and Julie’s Communications Experience

Pratt Street Communications’ brand essence is one of infinite curiosity. We’re consumed with figuring out why individuals feel, think, act, react, and change. Our research process partners solid statistical evidence with qualitative exploration rooted in coaching, stakeholder engagement, and facilitation. We establish trust, explore interests, verify what we’ve heard, and inquire about what we suspect. We immerse ourselves in the perspectives of your key audiences. This immersion process allows us to honestly represent the requirements of your stakeholders and the realities of your organization throughout the marketing and communications strategy development process.

We’ve been practicing the art and science of asking “Why?” and delivering strategic messaging programs on the most traditional – and the most cutting-edge – platforms. We’re senior communications professionals who have both held executive leadership positions in global advertising agencies, publicly traded corporations, cause-related non-profits, and multinational public relations firms. We’ve even conducted postgraduate academic research on creating behavior change. This experience affords us considerable knowledge of many different industry sectors and communications approaches. And, it makes us experts at mining the complex in order to create a simple, compelling narrative.

Julie Garel and Dave Groobert - Communications Professionals - Our Story

Dave Groobert, Editor-in-Chief

Dave knew he wanted to specialize in communications from elementary school, when he self-published a 6th grade newsletter for classmates. After graduating college, Dave spent ten years working in the PR division of two national advertising agencies, then went client-side to head public relations for a global, publicly traded telecommunications company acquired by Lockheed Martin. From there, he spent several years running the consumer and technology marketing practices of Hill & Knowlton’s Washington office. Years later, Dave was tapped to open and run the Washington office of North American public relations agency, Environics Communications, where he remained for almost 15 years. Under his leadership, his office won two Silver Anvil Awards, the highest national recognition given to public relations campaigns.

Dave has an extensive range of client experience in many sectors including association/non-profit; philanthropic/cause-related; healthcare, biotechnology and genomics; technology and telecommunications; sustainability and clean energy; corporate and financial services; and consumer goods and services. He has worked with clients from two-person start-up companies to global organizations. Dave specializes in communications plan development, message development for complex organizations, media training, writing, and crisis communications. Quite literally, Dave wrote the chapter on corporate communications in the book Essays on Governance: 36 Critical Essays to Drive Shareholder Value and Business Growth, published by Advantage Media Group.

Dave is an honors graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, and he has a Master’s degree in Management and Leadership from Western Governors University. Additionally, he frequently lectures on marketing and public relations at area colleges and universities, and sponsors a scholarship for photography students at The Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, part of The George Washington University.

Julie Garel, Chief Curiosity Officer

Julie began her communications career as a small child performing commercials in her parents’ pantry. With considerable education and direct experience, her effectiveness improved dramatically. She has led branding and communications programs for a wide range of clients including travel, food, retail, and healthcare marketers. Julie worked at J. Walter Thompson Worldwide and W.B. Doner as a Senior Vice President. She led a national non-profit, multi-stakeholder engagement program for the Convergence Center on Policy Resolution. That three-year collaboration of more than 70 organizations was designed to build new healthy food marketing initiatives.

Julie has a Master of International Business degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management and a Master in Sustainability and Environmental Management from Harvard. Her thesis focus was on the ability of stakeholder inclusionary processes to create behavior change. She received her undergraduate degree from New York University in journalism and mass communications.

Julie has conducted countless hours of consumer interviews: ethnographic studies, focus groups, email extended interviews, and in-depth interviews are among the formats she favors. Julie is trained as a life coach and focus group moderator. She has considerable experience facilitating consensus building sessions and strategic priority setting sessions.
